- **AKH Vienna inpatient (self-payer):** around €830+/day in a public LKH per ÖGK Tagsatztabelle 2025. A single hospital week without cover usually exceeds the entire annual Care Au-Pair premium. (Source: ÖGK Tagsatztabelle 2025).

## Four worries every au pair has before flying to Vienna

**Quick answer:** Four worries dominate au-pair onboarding to Austria: accidental damage in the host family's home, getting sick during the language course, weekend trips inside Schengen, and MA 35 paperwork rejection. Care Au-Pair M from €35/month combines health and household liability in one policy and produces the MA 35 certificate within minutes.

## Avoid the mistakes that can delay your application

### Schengen proof missing?

For short Schengen stays, choose insurance that meets the €30,000 minimum-coverage requirement.

### Short stay or longer stay?

Care Visa Protect fits many 1–92 day Schengen visits; Care Economy may fit longer or more flexible stays.

### Wrong insurance can cost time

Before your embassy appointment, check that the proof matches your visa type, dates and destination.

### Multiple entries planned?

If you travel more than once, check the multiple-entry option and the annual day limit before applying.

## What it costs in Austria without recognised au-pair insurance

## One wrong insurance choice can cost you money, time and your application deadline

A medical incident can become expensive fast — but the wrong certificate can also delay your visa, enrollment, residence permit or work start.

🏥

€500–€1,500

Emergency doctor visit

One urgent doctor or emergency-room visit can already create a painful bill — before tests, medication or follow-up treatment are added.

🏨

€2,000–€10,000+

Hospital treatment

If observation, surgery, overnight stay or specialist treatment is needed, costs can quickly move from hundreds to thousands of euros.

🇦🇹

Austria is different

German proof may not fit MA35

For Austrian residence documents, choose an Austria-specific option instead of assuming German-focused insurance will fit.

- Wrong or incomplete proof can delay your visa, enrollment or authority process.
- Cheap home-country policies may miss the exact coverage, dates or repatriation wording required.
- The cheapest policy can become expensive if it is the wrong proof for your situation.

Before you apply, check: coverage amount, validity dates, destination area and repatriation cover.

## Why timing matters before the MA 35 / Bezirkshauptmannschaft appointment

## Why act before Austrian residence paperwork

Austria has its own residence-process requirements. A Germany-focused insurance route may not fit MA35 or magistrate documents.

## Six mandatory fields MA 35 expects on the au-pair certificate

From dozens of MA 35 and Bezirkshauptmannschaft au-pair cases we have seen, these six fields decide whether the certificate is accepted at the first appointment. Care Au-Pair includes them all by default in the PDF (subject to HanseMerkur AVB 2025).

Name exactly as in the passport

Every given name — including middle names — must match the passport letter by letter. Spelling mismatches are a common reason for a Rückstellung at the first appointment.

Gap-free validity period

Policy start date on or before the planned entry / au-pair start date — no day uncovered. End date covering the planned 12-month (or 18-month extended) au-pair window.

Austria as geographical scope

Policy must explicitly cover Austria. Schengen minimum cover is €30,000 for medical treatment; for the long-term au-pair permit MA 35 expects open coverage in line with § 11 NAG.

Insurer name + policy number

Legal insurer (HanseMerkur) and unique policy / certificate number must be printed on the PDF. Care Au-Pair certificates show both at the top.

Language: German or English

MA 35 routinely accepts both. Documents in other languages typically require a certified translation, which costs additional time and money.

Inpatient hospital coverage

Stationary treatment must be included. Care Au-Pair covers inpatient treatment within the AVB — no separate hospital rider needed for the residence-permit file.

## Which Austrian permit fits your au-pair situation?

Five au-pair situations come up at MA 35 and the Bezirkshauptmannschaften. Each one needs a health-insurance proof under § 11 Abs. 2 Z 3 NAG — the right Care Concept tariff depends on citizenship, age and stay duration.

Aufenthaltsbewilligung Sonderfälle unselbständiger Erwerbstätigkeit (§ 63 NAG)

Third-country au pairs aged 18–28, restricted labour-market access for the au-pair activity only. The standard route for non-EU au pairs.

Recommended cover: [Care Au-Pair Si–XL (ages ≤ 35, 1–24 months, from €21/month)](/en/insurance-plans/care-au-pair/overview/)

Freedom of movement — EU / EEA / Swiss au pairs

Au pairs from any EU / EEA member state or Switzerland. No residence permit required; an Anmeldebescheinigung (§ 51 NAG) is filed after 3 months.

Recommended cover: [Care Au-Pair M or XL — for added liability and accident cover.](/en/insurance-plans/care-au-pair/overview/)

National D-visa for the run-up phase

Third-country candidates who enter before the au-pair contract starts (language course, MA 35 appointment, ZMR registration).

Recommended cover: [Care Economy — flexible 1 day to 2 years, Schengen-compliant.](/en/insurance-plans/care-economy/overview/)

Au pair > 35 years or Wahlarzt preference

Applicants over the Care Au-Pair age cap or with a strong free-choice-of-doctor preference.

Recommended cover: [Care Austria Standard — ages 0–74, Wahlarzt without Selbstbehalt within the AVB.](/en/insurance-plans/care-austria/overview/)

Extension beyond 12 months (up to 18 months)

Au pairs extending their stay; ÖIF Integrationsvereinbarung Module 1 (German A2) may become relevant.

Recommended cover: [Care Au-Pair is bookable for the full 24-month maximum.](/en/insurance-plans/care-au-pair/overview/)

## Extending an au-pair stay from 12 to 18 months — 4-step process

Austrian au-pair stays are capped at 12 months under § 1 Abs. 2 Z 5 AuslBG iVm § 49 ASVG, with a possible 6-month extension to a total of 18 months. File the extension before the existing permit expires — missing the deadline turns the case into a new first application and risks a residence gap.

1. 1 **Mind the legal cap:** 12 + 6 = 18 months maximum. Set a calendar reminder three months before expiry.
2. 2 **Keep insurance gap-free:** renew [Care Au-Pair](/en/insurance-plans/care-au-pair/overview/) online — the tariff is bookable for the full 24-month maximum in a single purchase.
3. 3 **Prepare ÖIF Module 1:** stays beyond 12 months can trigger Module 1 of the Integrationsvereinbarung (German A2). Continue the host-family German course and keep proof of attendance.
4. 4 **Submit at MA 35 / BH:** passport, expiring permit, ZMR Meldezettel, extended au-pair contract and the gap-free Care Au-Pair PDF — which satisfies § 11 Abs. 2 Z 3 NAG.

## Responsible authorities by Austrian federal state

The au-pair Versicherungsnachweis is valid nationwide. The responsible authority depends on the host family's Hauptwohnsitz address — the legal basis (§ 63 NAG, § 11 NAG) is identical everywhere.

## What the Austrian host family is responsible for

Under Austrian au-pair rules the host family is the employer. They provide a private room, full board and pocket money, must register the au pair with ÖGK once pocket money exceeds the Geringfügigkeitsgrenze (~ €518.44/month, Stand 2025), and must enable at least two hours of German language course per week. The au-pair workload is capped at 20 hours per week of childcare and light household help. Many host families also fund Care Au-Pair as part of the contract — the €21–€43/month premium fits inside the typical au-pair budget and removes the household liability worry on both sides.

## ÖGK and Care Au-Pair — when each route applies

When pocket money is at or above the Geringfügigkeitsgrenze (~ €518.44/month, 2025), the host family must register the au pair with ÖGK; statutory cover then begins from the registration date. Below the threshold, no automatic ÖGK cover applies and Care Au-Pair is the only continuous protection. In both cases MA 35 still wants a written Versicherungsnachweis at the Aufenthaltsbewilligung file — the Care Au-Pair PDF delivers this from day one and can be cancelled monthly once ÖGK confirms cover.

## Case study — Mariana from the Philippines, au pair in Wien-Hietzing

**Situation:** Mariana (24) lands a 12-month au-pair contract with a family in Wien-Hietzing. Her MA 35 appointment in Dresdner Straße is in three weeks. The document checklist demands "Nachweis ausreichenden Krankenversicherungsschutzes" under § 11 Abs. 2 Z 3 NAG and an au-pair-typical liability cover.

**Challenge:** her Philippine policy is not recognised by MA 35; ÖGK Pflichtversicherung will not start until the host family registers her after entry. Without proof, the Aufenthaltsbewilligung Sonderfälle file would be set aside.

**Solution:** two weeks before departure she takes out Care Au-Pair M (€35/month) online. The PDF Versicherungsbestätigung arrives within minutes with her name "Mariana Cruz Reyes" exactly as in the passport, validity from the planned entry date, geographical scope Austria, insurer HanseMerkur and policy number visible. The host family in Hietzing covers the premium as part of the au-pair contract.

**Outcome:** MA 35 accepted the proof in her individual case — the Aufenthaltsbewilligung Sonderfälle was issued within six weeks. Three months into the stay Mariana broke a host-family Smart TV; Care Au-Pair M reimbursed the €820 repair invoice within the AVB. _Individual case; authority and insurer decisions depend on the file._

**Field note:** across many MA 35 au-pair consultations, the two top reasons for a Rückstellung at the first appointment are passport-spelling mismatch (middle names!) and a policy with no Austrian geographical scope.

## Frequently Asked Questions

What insurance does an au pair need in Austria?

[Care Au-Pair from €21/month](/en/insurance-plans/care-au-pair/overview/) is designed specifically for au pairs in DACH (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) — M and XL include the host-family liability inside the policy. Au pairs in Austria need a health-insurance proof for the Aufenthaltsbewilligung Sonderfälle unselbständiger Erwerbstätigkeit (§ 63 NAG) at MA 35 Wien or the responsible Bezirkshauptmannschaft, plus a household liability cover for accidental damage at the host family's home.

How much does Care Au-Pair cost in Austria?

Care Au-Pair Si €21/month (health only), S €26, M €35 (bestseller — adds liability for accidents in the host family's home), XL €43 (liability + accident cover). Eligible up to age 35, term 1–24 months — long enough for any Austrian au-pair stay including the 6-month extension. Prices Stand 2025/2026; HanseMerkur AVB 2025.

Is Care Au-Pair accepted by MA 35 Vienna and the Bezirkshauptmannschaften?

In the regular case yes — Care Au-Pair meets the health-insurance requirement under § 11 Abs. 2 Z 3 NAG for the Aufenthaltsbewilligung Sonderfälle at MA 35 Wien and at Bezirkshauptmannschaften in Graz, Linz, Salzburg, Innsbruck, Klagenfurt, Bregenz, Eisenstadt and St. Pölten. Final acceptance always rests with the responsible authority on a case-by-case basis. The PDF certificate is issued by email within minutes after a successful application, subject to the insurer's terms.

Care Au-Pair or Care Austria — which one should I pick?

Care Au-Pair (from €21/month) is the cheaper, au-pair-specific option with optional liability (M, XL) and accident cover (XL), available up to age 35. [Care Austria from €51/month](/en/insurance-plans/care-austria/overview/) is the adult tariff with free choice of doctor (Wahlarzt) and no Selbstbehalt within the AVB — the recommended path for au pairs over 35 or who want unrestricted Wahlarzt billing.

Does Care Au-Pair cover liability damage in the host family's home?

Yes — Care Au-Pair M and XL include household liability cover (Haftpflichtversicherung) within the AVB. Accidental damage to host-family property (broken electronics, water damage, scratched parquet) is reimbursed up to the policy limits. The Si variant does not include liability — the au pair would have to pay damages out of pocket.

What happens if the au pair gets sick in Austria?

Without recognised cover the bill is paid out of pocket: a Wahlarzt first visit in Austria typically costs €120–€300 (gesundheitskasse. With Care Au-Pair the au pair visits an Allgemeinmediziner or — depending on the variant and Selbstbehalt — a Wahlarzt and submits the invoice for reimbursement within the AVB. at 2025) and an inpatient day at AKH Wien around €830 (ÖGK Tagsatztabelle 2025). A valid policy protects both the au pair and the host family.

How long can an au pair stay in Austria?

Au-pair stays are capped at 12 months, extendable by 6 months for a total of 18 months under § 1 Abs. 2 Z 5 AuslBG iVm § 49 ASVG. Care Au-Pair is bookable for 1–24 months in a single purchase, so a single online booking covers the full Austrian au-pair window including any extension.

What is the Geringfügigkeitsgrenze and when does ÖGK kick in?

The Austrian Geringfügigkeitsgrenze is approximately €518.44/month in 2025 (gesundheitskasse.at). When au-pair pocket money is at or above this threshold, the host family must register the au pair with ÖGK; below it there is no automatic statutory cover. Either way MA 35 still wants a written Versicherungsnachweis — Care Au-Pair delivers this from day one and can be cancelled monthly once ÖGK confirms.

Does the au pair need ÖIF Module 1 (German A2) for an extension?

Stays beyond 12 months can trigger Module 1 of the Integrationsvereinbarung at the Österreichischer Integrationsfonds (German A2). The host family is required to enable at least two hours of German language course per week; keep proof of attendance. The exact requirement is decided by MA 35 / Bezirkshauptmannschaft on a case-by-case basis.

How fast is the Care Au-Pair PDF certificate?

After completing the online application the PDF Versicherungsbestätigung is typically issued by email within minutes, subject to a successful application and the insurer's terms (HanseMerkur AVB 2025). It carries the name as in the passport, validity period, geographical scope Austria, insurer name and policy number — the key items MA 35 and Bezirkshauptmannschaften check before issuing the Aufenthaltsbewilligung.

I'm an EU / EEA / Swiss au pair — do I still need Care Au-Pair in Austria?

EU, EEA and Swiss au pairs benefit from freedom of movement and file an Anmeldebescheinigung (§ 51 NAG) instead of a residence permit. Statutory ÖGK cover starts via the host family once pocket money exceeds the Geringfügigkeitsgrenze (~ €518.44/month, 2025). Below the threshold there is no automatic cover; [Care Au-Pair M or XL](/en/insurance-plans/care-au-pair/overview/) is still recommended for the gap before ÖGK registration and for the au-pair-specific household liability that ÖGK does not include.

What's the cheapest au-pair insurance in Austria?

The cheapest fully MA 35-suitable cover is Care Au-Pair Si at €21/month (health only). Most host families and au pairs pick M at €35/month because it adds household liability for accidental damage in the host family's home — a single broken Smart TV (€500–€1,500 repair) usually exceeds the annual premium difference between Si and M. Comparable adult tariffs (Care Austria, ÖGK Selbstversicherung) start around €51/month — see the costs table above.

I'm a US, UK, Indian or Filipino au pair coming to Vienna or Graz — what changes?

The Austrian au-pair Aufenthaltsbewilligung Sonderfälle (§ 63 NAG) is open to most third-country nationals aged 18–28 with a signed host-family contract. Citizens of the US, UK, India, the Philippines, Brazil, Colombia and similar countries file the same documents at MA 35 Wien or the responsible Bezirkshauptmannschaft in Graz, Linz, Salzburg, Innsbruck, Klagenfurt, Bregenz, St. Pölten or Eisenstadt. Care Au-Pair is recognised regardless of nationality — what matters is gap-free validity, scope Austria, name as in the passport and the HanseMerkur policy number on the PDF.

Is Care Au-Pair accepted by Austrian authorities (MA 35)?

In general yes – Care Au-Pair meets the health insurance requirements under § 11 Abs. 2 Z 3 NAG for the residence permit at MA 35 in Vienna and at district administrative authorities in other federal states. The final acceptance decision is made by the authority on a case-by-case basis. The PDF certificate is issued by email within minutes after online application, subject to the insurer's terms.

Should I get Care Au-Pair or Care Austria as an au pair?

Care Au-Pair (from €21/month) is the cheaper, au-pair-specific option with optional liability (M/XL) and accident cover (XL). Care Austria (from €51/month) is the classic adult plan with free choice of doctor (Wahlarzt). For typical 12-month au pair stays in Austria, Care Au-Pair is usually the better fit. See our [product overview](/produktuebersicht/) for all plans.

How quickly can I get the Care Au-Pair PDF certificate?

It contains your name (as in passport), validity period, geographic scope (Austria), insurer name and policy number – the key items typically required by MA 35 or Bezirkshauptmannschaft. After completing the online application, the PDF certificate is issued by email within minutes in the regular case, subject to insurer terms.

What is the Austrian ÖGK threshold for au pairs?

€518. The marginal-earnings threshold (Geringfügigkeitsgrenze) in Austria is approx. 44/month in 2025 (gesundheitskasse. at). If the pocket money exceeds this, the host family must register the au pair with ÖGK. Below the threshold, no mandatory statutory coverage exists – making Care Au-Pair as supplementary protection particularly important.
