The standard route is to extend au pair residence permit by switching purpose — switch visa after au pair to a § 16b AufenthG student visa, § 16a AufenthG apprenticeship, § 20 AufenthG job-seeker visa, or § 20a Chancenkarte. Apply at the Ausländerbehörde to change residence permit before the old card expires; if processing runs over, you typically receive a Fiktionsbescheinigung au pair so your stay (and work) remain legal in the meantime.",
