# Blocked Account Without a German Address or Bank: Typical Hurdles and Solutions (2026) in Germany

A blocked account with €11,904 (12-month deposit) is required for most German student visas and the Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte). The BASTI package (€4.90/month + €65 setup) bundles the account with recognized health insurance, satisfying both visa requirements at once.

## Frequently asked questions

Can I open a German blocked account without a German address?

Yes. BASTI, Fintiba and Coracle open the blocked account with your home-country address before entry — no Anmeldung needed. Setup at BASTI: €65 + €4.90/month. Health insurance (Care Visa Protect from €0.85/day) is also opened from abroad and filed with the visa application.

Do I need a German bank account before opening a blocked account?

No. The blocked account itself is the German bank account for the €11,904 deposit. BASTI and Fintiba accept international SWIFT transfers from any home country. Insurance (Care Visa Protect from €0.85/day) and the blocked account are the two visa-ready proofs — neither needs a local bank.

What are the typical hurdles when opening a blocked account from abroad in Germany?

Wrong SWIFT reference, incomplete passport scan, or missing university admission letter. Solution: send the €11,904 in a single transfer with the BASTI reference number in the payment message. Insurance PDFs (Care Visa Protect from €0.85/day) are issued in minutes as a parallel proof.

Can I open BASTI before I have a German visa or address?

Yes — BASTI is designed to be opened before the visa appointment. The €11,904 deposit and blocked account confirmation are typically prerequisites for the visa. Health insurance (Care Visa Protect from €0.85/day, €30,000 Schengen cover) is opened alongside and both PDFs go into the visa file.

How do I switch the blocked account to a normal German bank after arrival?

After Anmeldung (address registration) in Germany, the €992/month payout can transfer to any regular bank (N26, Sparkasse, Deutsche Bank). The blocked account itself stays with BASTI until the balance is depleted. Insurance (DAK-Studenten ~€135.52/month or Care Student €101.54/month) is opened separately on day 1 of Immatrikulation.

What insurance can I get without a German address?

Travel and incoming health insurance can be purchased online without a German address. [Care Visa Protect (from 0.85 EUR/day)](/en/insurance-plans/care-visa-protect/overview/) provides the Schengen visa proof you need.

How long does it take to open a blocked account from abroad?

The Video-Ident takes about 15 minutes. The international SWIFT transfer typically takes 2–5 business days. Plan at least 3 weeks before your visa appointment. The [BASTI blocked account (from 4.90 EUR/month)](/en/insurance-plans/blocked-account/overview/) is designed for international applicants.
