## 📌 TL;DR — at a glance

- German D-visa (student) appointments at the embassy require TWO independent proofs: (1) a blocked account (Sperrkonto) with the current pledge of €11,904 for 12 months as proof of financial means, and (2) a separate, recognised health-insurance certificate valid from the planned entry date. The blocked account does NOT include health insurance — this is the single most common reason embassies reject otherwise complete files.
- The standard combination: BASTI blocked account from €4.90/month (€65 setup, €11,904 deposit) for the financial proof, plus Care College from €27.50/month for the insurance proof (recognised by German embassies for the D-visa, runs 1–60 months covering language course / Studienkolleg). For the visa appointment alone, Care Visa Protect from €0.85/day delivers the certificate by email within minutes (€30,000 Schengen cover, EU Reg. 810/2009).
- Two failure modes: (1) showing only the Sperrkonto confirmation without a separate insurance certificate — embassy will not approve the D-visa; (2) opening the blocked account only 1–2 weeks before the appointment — Video-Ident takes 1–4 weeks (up to 6 weeks in Lagos / Kairo). Start the blocked-account procedure 4 weeks before the appointment, take the insurance out the same day online.

Key facts at a glance Reviewed September 9, 2026

- **Two independent proofs at the embassy: financial (Sperrkonto) AND medical (insurance certificate):** Under § 2 AufenthV the German embassy requires proof of financial means (currently €11,904 for 12 months) PLUS a separate recognised health-insurance certificate valid from the planned entry date. The Sperrkonto is purely a financial proof — it does NOT include or replace the insurance certificate. (Source: § 2 AufenthV · § 5 AufenthG).
- **BASTI blocked account: €4.90/month + €65 setup, €11,904 deposit, Video-Ident in 1–4 weeks:** BASTI delivers the Sperrkonto-Bestätigung the embassy expects. Video-Ident is faster than Post-Ident; busy embassies (Lagos, Cairo, Tehran, New Delhi) can extend the wait to 4–6 weeks — start at least 4 weeks before the appointment. (Source: BASTI Sperrkonto T&Cs).
- **Care College — €27.50–138/month, 1–60 months, recognised by German embassies for the D-visa:** Standard insurance proof for the D-visa + language-course / Studienkolleg phase (12–40 years, no pre-existing conditions). PDF certificate by email within minutes. Monthly cancellable so it ends cleanly the day Immatrikulation is confirmed. (Source: HanseMerkur Care College AVB).
- **Switch on Immatrikulation day: DAK ~€135.52/mo (M10 automatic) or Care Student €101.54/mo:** From day 1 of enrolment the GKV student tariff (DAK-Gesundheit) is mandatory for under-30s — M10 filed directly to the university (§ 199a SGB V). For over-30 / PhD / GKV-exempt students Care Student replaces it under § 8 SGB V (GKV-equivalent, M10 PDF). (Source: § 199a SGB V · § 8 SGB V · DAK-Gesundheit operations 2025).

## Five typical mistakes when combining Sperrkonto and insurance proof

**Quick answer:** "I have the Sperrkonto — why was my visa rejected?" — most applicants run into one of five issues: assuming the blocked account includes insurance; opening the Sperrkonto only 2 weeks before the appointment; choosing a Care College tier below €30,000 cover; bringing only digital PDFs to embassies that require printouts; or starting the GKV-switch after the enrolment deadline.

## Avoid the mistakes that can delay your application

### Enrollment can stall without M10

DAK Student and Care Student support electronic M10 notification for eligible university enrollment flows.

### Under 30 or over 30?

DAK Student fits many students up to age 29; Care Student can fit private student coverage up to age 39.

### Private or statutory confusion

Choosing the wrong route can create extra steps. Check statutory, private and exemption rules before applying.

### Language school is different

Care College is better for language school, Studienkolleg, DSH and educational stays — not M10 university enrollment.

## What a missing or wrong proof actually costs

## One wrong insurance choice can cost you money, time and your application deadline

A medical incident can become expensive fast — but the wrong certificate can also delay your visa, enrollment, residence permit or work start.

🏥

€500–€1,500

Emergency doctor visit

One urgent doctor or emergency-room visit can already create a painful bill — before tests, medication or follow-up treatment are added.

🏨

€2,000–€10,000+

Hospital treatment

If observation, surgery, overnight stay or specialist treatment is needed, costs can quickly move from hundreds to thousands of euros.

🎓

1 missed M10

Enrollment can get stuck

For university enrollment, the wrong insurance route can delay the electronic M10 notification to your university.

- Wrong or incomplete proof can delay your visa, enrollment or authority process.
- Cheap home-country policies may miss the exact coverage, dates or repatriation wording required.
- The cheapest policy can become expensive if it is the wrong proof for your situation.

Before you apply, check: coverage amount, validity dates, destination area and repatriation cover.

## Embassy appointment in days? Care College issues the recognised PDF in minutes

## Why act before university enrollment

University enrollment can depend on the right insurance route. Waiting too long can delay M10 notification or create extra steps.

🎓

M10 timing matters

DAK Student and Care Student can support M10 university enrollment flows where applicable.

📄

Wrong route creates delays

Language school, Studienkolleg and DSH usually need Care College, not the university M10 route.

## Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to open a blocked account for Germany?

Typically 1–4 weeks, depending on the provider and your country. Video-Ident is usually faster than Post-Ident. Start at least 4 weeks before your embassy appointment. The health insurance certificate (e.g., Care College) can be obtained within minutes online.

Do I need both a blocked account and health insurance for a German student visa?

Yes — german embassies typically require both: a blocked account (Sperrkonto, currently €11,904 for 12 months) as proof of financial means AND a separate health insurance certificate. Care College (from €27.50/month, up to 60 months) provides instant proof of coverage for the visa application.

Can I use Care College insurance for the visa and then switch to public insurance?

Yes — once enrolled at a German university, students under 30 can switch to statutory health insurance (GKV) like DAK-Gesundheit (~€135/month). Care College covers the visa application and study preparation phase (language course, Studienkolleg). Plan the transition in advance to avoid coverage gaps.

Do I need insurance BEFORE entering Germany or is upon arrival enough?

Under § 5 AufenthG the German embassy requires proof of valid health insurance from the day of intended entry — not from arrival at Frankfurt airport. Before entering. Care Visa Protect (from €0.85/day) or Care Student (€101.54/month, ages ≥30) start on any date you specify.

Can DAK-Gesundheit be arranged from abroad before I enter Germany?

Bridge the gap with Care Visa Protect (€0.85/day) or Care Student — most students bridge 2–6 weeks between arrival and matriculation this way. Yes but with a caveat: DAK can pre-register you, but the actual GKV coverage starts only from the day you register at the Ausländerbehörde or start your enrolment (§ 5 SGB V).
