**As a Werkstudent (max. 20 hours/week during the lecture period) the GKV student tariff at [DAK-Gesundheit](/en/insurance-plans/dak-gesundheit/overview/) stays unchanged** — you only pay the 9.3 % pension-insurance share. A mini-job up to €603/month (2026) also leaves the student tariff unchanged: the employer pays flat contributions, you pay nothing extra. Only above 20 hours/week is the Werkstudent privilege lost — full social security applies.

For foreign students the additional cap of **140 full days or 280 half days per year** (§ 16b AufenthG, 2026) protects the residence permit. Over-30s, GKV-exempt students and PhD candidates use [Care Student from €101.54/month (up to 5 years)](/en/insurance-plans/care-student/overview/) — the GKV-equivalent private alternative. Still in the language course? ## 📌 TL;DR — at a glance

- As a Werkstudent (max. 20 hours/week during the lecture period) you keep the GKV student tariff at DAK-Gesundheit (~€135.52/month with Garantietarif 120). You only pay the 9.3 % pension-insurance share — no health, care or unemployment contributions. Over 20 h/week the Werkstudent privilege is lost, full social security applies and DAK-Angestellte (~17.8 % of gross) replaces the student tariff.
- A mini-job up to €603/month (2026) normally has no effect on the student tariff: the employer pays flat contributions, the student pays nothing extra. Above €603 the midi-job zone (€603.01–€2,000) starts with proportional social-security contributions.
- Foreign students with a study residence permit may work 140 full or 280 half days per year (§ 16b AufenthG, 2026). Exceeding the limit can jeopardise the residence permit. Always notify the insurer (Krankenkasse) of every new job — the employer must register the Werkstudent status correctly via DEÜV; otherwise back-charges of 17.8 % of gross may be claimed.

Key facts at a glance Reviewed September 8, 2026

- **Werkstudent privilege (§ 6 SGB V): max. 20 hours/week during lectures:** As a Werkstudent you only pay the 9.3 % pension-insurance share — no health, care or unemployment contributions. The GKV student tariff at DAK-Gesundheit (~€135.52/month, Garantietarif 120 saves €120/year) stays unchanged. Above 20 h/week during the lecture period the privilege is lost. (Source: § 6 SGB V · DAK-Gesundheit operations 2025).
- **Mini-job threshold 2026: €603/month — no impact on the student tariff:** Up to €603/month the employer pays flat contributions and the student tariff stays unchanged. Above €603 the midi-job zone (€603.01–€2,000) starts with proportional social-security deductions; the Werkstudent privilege only protects you up to 20 hours/week, regardless of income. (Source: Minijob-Zentrale 2026).
- **Residence-permit cap: 140 full / 280 half days/year (§ 16b AufenthG):** Foreign students with a study residence permit may work 140 full or 280 half days per year. During semester breaks full-time work is allowed within that annual cap. Exceeding the cap can jeopardise the residence permit — always document the working days in writing. (Source: § 16b AufenthG (2026)).
- **If the privilege is lost: DAK-Angestellte ~17.8 % of gross instead of €135.52:** Above 20 h/week or after losing the Werkstudent status the GKV student tariff is replaced by DAK-Angestellte (~17.8 % of gross, employer/employee split). For €1,500 gross/month that is ~€134 employee share — still close to the student tariff, but with full statutory benefits and Krankengeld from day 43. (Source: DAK-Gesundheit contribution statement 2025).

## Five typical mistakes with a student part-time job in Germany

**Quick answer:** "Why did the Krankenkasse charge me an extra €1,200 after my summer job?" — most cases share one of five issues: working over 20 h/week during the lecture period without realising the Werkstudent privilege is lost; assuming a mini-job over €603/month still has no effect; not telling DAK about a new employer; the employer registering you as a regular employee in DEÜV instead of Werkstudent; or exceeding the 140/280-day cap and risking the residence permit.

## Avoid the mistakes that can delay your application

### Enrollment can stall without M10

DAK Student and Care Student support electronic M10 notification for eligible university enrollment flows.

### Under 30 or over 30?

DAK Student fits many students up to age 29; Care Student can fit private student coverage up to age 39.

### Private or statutory confusion

Choosing the wrong route can create extra steps. Check statutory, private and exemption rules before applying.

### Language school is different

Care College is better for language school, Studienkolleg, DSH and educational stays — not M10 university enrollment.

## What losing the Werkstudent privilege actually costs

## One wrong insurance choice can cost you money, time and your application deadline

A medical incident can become expensive fast — but the wrong certificate can also delay your visa, enrollment, residence permit or work start.

🏥

€500–€1,500

Emergency doctor visit

One urgent doctor or emergency-room visit can already create a painful bill — before tests, medication or follow-up treatment are added.

🏨

€2,000–€10,000+

Hospital treatment

If observation, surgery, overnight stay or specialist treatment is needed, costs can quickly move from hundreds to thousands of euros.

🎓

1 missed M10

Enrollment can get stuck

For university enrollment, the wrong insurance route can delay the electronic M10 notification to your university.

- Wrong or incomplete proof can delay your visa, enrollment or authority process.
- Cheap home-country policies may miss the exact coverage, dates or repatriation wording required.
- The cheapest policy can become expensive if it is the wrong proof for your situation.

Before you apply, check: coverage amount, validity dates, destination area and repatriation cover.

## New job starting? Notify DAK in writing in the first week — back-charges accumulate fast

## Why act before university enrollment

University enrollment can depend on the right insurance route. Waiting too long can delay M10 notification or create extra steps.

🎓

M10 timing matters

DAK Student and Care Student can support M10 university enrollment flows where applicable.

📄

Wrong route creates delays

Language school, Studienkolleg and DSH usually need Care College, not the university M10 route.

⚡

Apply before enrollment pressure

Prepare insurance proof before the university or visa office asks for it urgently.

✅

Under 30 or over 30?

DAK Student and Care Student serve different student situations. Check age and eligibility before applying.

## Frequently Asked Questions

Does a part-time job change health insurance for a student in Germany?

Up to 20 hours per week during the semester the DAK-Studenten tariff (~€135.52/month) stays intact — the so-called Werkstudentenprivileg. Above 20h/week for a longer period, regular GKV (~17.8% of gross salary) applies instead.

What is the 20-hour rule for foreign students working in Germany?

International students under § 16b AufenthG may work up to 20 hours per week during lectures and full-time during semester break, without losing DAK-Studenten (~€135.52/month) status. The annual cap is 140 full or 280 half days.

Do I still pay DAK-Studenten if I earn over €538/month in a part-time job?

Yes, as long as you stay under 20h/week during the semester. Salary above €538/month triggers pension insurance deductions but keeps you on DAK-Studenten (~€135.52/month) — GKV, unemployment and Pflege contributions are waived.

When does GKV take over from DAK-Studenten in Germany?

Once you exceed 20h/week for more than 26 weeks per year, or take a permanent full-time job, GKV via the employer applies (~17.8% of gross, split 50/50). DAK-Studenten ends and a fresh M10 notification is sent to the university.

Can students over 30 also work part-time on Care Student in Germany?

Yes — above 20h/week or after study end, you typically switch to GKV via the employer or to Care Expatriate (from €58/month).

Does a part-time job affect student health insurance in Germany?

Not if you stay within the limits: max 20 hours per week during lectures, and income below the mini-job threshold (€556/month). The student GKV tariff at DAK-Gesundheit (~€135.52/month) remains unchanged. Always inform your insurer (Krankenkasse) about every new job to avoid back-charges. → [DAK student health insurance — instant M10](/en/insurance-plans/dak-gesundheit/overview/)

How many days can international students work in Germany per year?

International students with a study residence permit (Aufenthaltserlaubnis zum Studium) may work 120 full days or 240 half days per year. Working beyond this limit can jeopardise your residence permit. A Werkstudent contract (max 20h/week during lectures) is the most common arrangement — you only pay pension insurance contributions. → [Care College — Übergangs-Brücke](/en/insurance-plans/care-college/overview/)

What health insurance options exist for students over 30 with a part-time job in Germany?

Students over 30 lose access to the subsidized GKV student tariff. The most affordable alternative is Care Student at €101.54/month (12–29 yrs) or €127.60/month (30–39 yrs) — recognised as GKV-equivalent under § 8 SGB V for enrolment and residence-permit purposes. The voluntary GKV starts at around €210/month. → [Care Student — for 30+ and PhD](/en/insurance-plans/care-student/overview/)
