## 📌 TL;DR — at a glance

- The choice between statutory (GKV) and private student health insurance in Germany is binding for the ENTIRE studies under § 8 Abs. 1 Nr. 1 SGB V — the Befreiung from GKV has to be filed within the first 3 months of enrolment and cannot be reversed afterwards. Three matrix outcomes: (1) Default for enrolled students under 30 → DAK Studenten ~€135.52/month (M10 to the university, no Befreiung needed, includes Familienversicherung for partner and children); (2) Private with M10 → Care Student €101.54/month (HanseMerkur, GKV-equivalent under § 257 SGB V) — mandatory for students aged 30+ and stipend-funded PhDs without enrolment, optional under 30 if you file the Befreiung in the first 3 months (irreversible); (3) Pre-studies, language course, Studienkolleg → Care College from €27.50/month (no GKV access yet, switches to DAK or Care Student on day 1 of Immatrikulation).
- What the Ausländerbehörde and the university accept as recognised proof: M10 notification from DAK (GKV) or Care Student (private GKV-equivalent) for enrolled students; the recognised PDF certificate from Care College for the pre-studies / language phase. A travel insurance is NOT accepted for the residence permit beyond 90 days, and a private cover without § 257 SGB V equivalence cannot replace the GKV — meaning the Befreiung is only possible against a recognised GKV-equivalent product like Care Student.
- The most expensive 5-year mistake students make: filing the Befreiung from GKV in the first 3 months for short-term cost savings, and then losing the right to switch back into the statutory system for the entire studies. Once a student is befreit they stay private until graduation (or until they leave Germany) — meaning a 4-year Bachelor + 2-year Master pays roughly €4,440 more than DAK if they later have a child or a partner who would have qualified for free Familienversicherung. Rule of thumb: choose private only if you are 30+, doctoral, or financially confident the lower premium beats future GKV benefits.

Key facts at a glance Reviewed September 10, 2026

- **§ 8 Abs. 1 Nr. 1 SGB V: the Befreiung from GKV is irreversible for the entire studies:** A student who files the Befreiung within the first 3 months of enrolment cannot return to statutory health insurance during the studies. The only legal exits are leaving Germany, starting compulsory employee membership (Wiss. Mitarbeiter / working > 20 h/week), or reaching the GKV age cap of 30. (Source: § 8 Abs. 1 Nr. 1 SGB V).
- **GKV student tariff hard age cap 30 — Care Student is the recognised replacement:** DAK Studenten ~€135.52/month is restricted to candidates under 30 (§ 5 Abs. 1 Nr. 9 SGB V). For doctoral candidates, students aged 30+ and any candidate without GKV access, Care Student €101.54/month (HanseMerkur, GKV-equivalent under § 257 SGB V) is the recognised replacement and also issues an M10. (Source: § 5 Abs. 1 Nr. 9 SGB V · § 257 SGB V).
- **Pre-studies / language / Studienkolleg: Care College from €27.50/month — no GKV access yet:** Before formal Immatrikulation the GKV student tariff is unavailable. Care College (HanseMerkur Incoming-Versicherung, 1–60 months, ages 12–40, accepted by every Ausländerbehörde for § 16b AufenthG) is the recognised solution; the policy is converted to DAK or Care Student on day 1 of enrolment. (Source: HanseMerkur Care College AVB 2026).
- **Average uninsured emergency-room visit in Germany: ~€830 per day:** Statistisches Bundesamt DRG data shows an average inpatient day rate of around €830 (basic ward). Without recognised cover the foreign student pays this in cash before discharge — a €27.50 monthly Care College premium prevents this risk completely. (Source: Statistisches Bundesamt DRG 2024).

## Five typical mistakes when choosing GKV vs private student insurance

**Quick answer:** "GKV or private — which student health insurance is right in Germany?" — most foreign students run into one of five issues: filing the Befreiung in month 1 to save €34 and losing the right to return to GKV for the entire studies; assuming the choice can be reversed; missing the Familienversicherung benefit for partner and children; using a travel policy after Immatrikulation; or staying on Care College after enrolment instead of switching to DAK / Care Student on day 1.

## Avoid the mistakes that can delay your application

### Enrollment can stall without M10

DAK Student and Care Student support electronic M10 notification for eligible university enrollment flows.

### Under 30 or over 30?

DAK Student fits many students up to age 29; Care Student can fit private student coverage up to age 39.

### Private or statutory confusion

Choosing the wrong route can create extra steps. Check statutory, private and exemption rules before applying.

### Language school is different

Care College is better for language school, Studienkolleg, DSH and educational stays — not M10 university enrollment.

## What the wrong GKV-vs-private choice can cost you over a 5-year studies

## One wrong insurance choice can cost you money, time and your application deadline

A medical incident can become expensive fast — but the wrong certificate can also delay your visa, enrollment, residence permit or work start.

🏥

€500–€1,500

Emergency doctor visit

One urgent doctor or emergency-room visit can already create a painful bill — before tests, medication or follow-up treatment are added.

🏨

€2,000–€10,000+

Hospital treatment

If observation, surgery, overnight stay or specialist treatment is needed, costs can quickly move from hundreds to thousands of euros.

🎓

1 missed M10

Enrollment can get stuck

For university enrollment, the wrong insurance route can delay the electronic M10 notification to your university.

- Wrong or incomplete proof can delay your visa, enrollment or authority process.
- Cheap home-country policies may miss the exact coverage, dates or repatriation wording required.
- The cheapest policy can become expensive if it is the wrong proof for your situation.

Before you apply, check: coverage amount, validity dates, destination area and repatriation cover.

## Imma deadline in the next 14 days? The Befreiung window starts on day 1 — decide before signing

## Why act before university enrollment

University enrollment can depend on the right insurance route. Waiting too long can delay M10 notification or create extra steps.

🎓

M10 timing matters

DAK Student and Care Student can support M10 university enrollment flows where applicable.

📄

Wrong route creates delays

Language school, Studienkolleg and DSH usually need Care College, not the university M10 route.

## FAQ — Statutory or private student health insurance in Germany

## Frequently Asked Questions

Statutory or private student health insurance in Germany — which one applies?

Under 30 and enrolled at a German university → GKV student tariff (DAK-Studenten, ~€135.52/month). Over 30, 14th semester or § 8 SGB V exemption → private GKV-equivalent Care Student at €101.54/month. Both send the M10 to the university.

Can I choose private insurance instead of GKV as an international student in Germany?

Yes, if you file a § 8 SGB V exemption within the first 3 months of enrolment. From then on you use the GKV-equivalent Care Student (€101.54/month) for the entire study duration — the decision is binding under German law.

Is Care Student cheaper than DAK-Studenten in Germany?

Yes — Care Student is the recognised GKV-equivalent for students over 30 or beyond the 14th semester.

What is the age limit for GKV student insurance in Germany?

Age 30 or the 14th academic semester under § 5 (1) 9 SGB V — whichever comes first. After that DAK-Studenten (~€135.52/month) ends and the recognised follow-on is Care Student (€101.54/month) via M10.

Does the German embassy accept private student insurance for the visa?

Yes — both are typically accepted by German embassies and the Ausländerbehörde for the student residence permit.
