**The GKV student tariff (KVdS) is legally capped at age 30 (§ 5 Abs. 1 Nr. 9 SGB V). On the first of the month following the 30th birthday, DAK-Studenten and the other statutory funds move you to the regular voluntary GKV rate of roughly €220–250/month — almost double the previous student rate.** Foreign students with a residence permit can avoid that jump by switching to [Care Student from €101.54/month (up to 5 years)](/en/insurance-plans/care-student/overview/) — GKV-equivalent under HanseMerkur, accepted by the university for continued enrolment after a § 8 SGB V exemption and including the M10 electronic notification under § 199a SGB V.

For PhD candidates (Promotionsstudenten), doctoral researchers and post-graduate exempt cases who no longer need the M10 university notification, [Care Expatriate from €58/month (up to 5 years)](/en/insurance-plans/care-expatriate/overview/) is the recognised private alternative — accepted by the Ausländerbehörde for the residence permit, with cover up to 60 months and worldwide protection including the home country. The full statutory-vs-private comparison for over-30 foreign students is in the [statutory or private guide](/en/guide-health-insurance-germany/health-insurance-students-germany/statutory-or-private-insurance-foreign-students-germany/), and the M10 workflow after the switch is in the [enrolment proof guide](/en/guide-health-insurance-germany/health-insurance-students-germany/health-insurance-proof-enrollment-university-germany/).

## 📌 TL;DR — at a glance

- The GKV student tariff (KVdS, § 5 Abs. 1 Nr. 9 SGB V) is legally limited to age 30. After that the cheap DAK-Studenten rate (~€135.52/month with Garantietarif 120) ends and the regular GKV voluntary rate would jump to ~€220–250/month. Foreign students with a residence permit can switch to a recognised private alternative on the legal exit date.
- Recognised switch path: Care Student €101.54/month (CCS €35 + PVN €58.04 + Pflege €8.50) — GKV-equivalent under § 257 SGB V context, accepted by the university for continued enrolment after a § 8 SGB V exemption. For PhD candidates, doctoral researchers and post-graduate exempt cases, Care Expatriate from €58/month is also accepted by the Ausländerbehörde for the residence permit. Cover up to 60 months in both cases.
- Plan the switch 4–6 weeks before the 30th birthday: file the § 8 SGB V exemption with the GKV, sign Care Student or Care Expatriate, and let the new insurer issue the proof for the university and the Ausländerbehörde so there is no coverage gap (§ 5 AufenthG).

Key facts at a glance Reviewed September 8, 2026

- **KVdS hard cap: age 30 (§ 5 Abs. 1 Nr. 9 SGB V):** On the first of the month following the 30th birthday, the GKV student tariff (~€135.52/month with Garantietarif 120) ends and the regular voluntary GKV rate of ~€220–250/month applies — unless a § 8 SGB V exemption is filed for a private alternative. (Source: § 5 Abs. 1 Nr. 9 SGB V · § 8 SGB V).
- **Care Student €101.54/month — GKV-equivalent for over-30 students:** CCS €35 + PVN €58.04 + Pflege €8.50 = €101.54/month total. HanseMerkur, GKV-equivalent under § 257 SGB V context, M10 electronic notification under § 199a SGB V included, accepted by the university for continued enrolment. (Source: HanseMerkur Care Student AVB · § 257 SGB V).
- **Care Expatriate from €58/month — PhD / doctoral / post-graduate:** From €58/month for ages 13–40; from €68/month for ages 41–60; from €246/month for ages 61–74. Worldwide cover including home country, accepted by the Ausländerbehörde for the residence permit (§ 5 AufenthG). Cover up to 60 months. (Source: HanseMerkur Care Expatriate AVB).
- **Delayed study extension is narrow — PhD students are NOT covered:** A delayed study for documented reasons (illness, care for a child, late higher-education access) can extend the KVdS for a limited period. PhD candidates / Promotionsstudenten do not qualify for the KVdS — they need Care Student (€101.54/month) or Care Expatriate (from €58/month) after the § 8 SGB V exemption. (Source: § 5 Abs. 1 Nr. 9 SGB V).

## Five typical mistakes around the age-30 switch

**Quick answer:** "Why did my GKV rate suddenly double after my 30th birthday?" — most files share one of five issues: missing the § 8 SGB V exemption window, not filing Care Student or Care Expatriate before the 1st of the month after the 30th birthday, assuming PhD students stay on the KVdS, missing the § 8 SGB V exemption deadline, or letting a coverage gap appear that puts the residence permit at risk under § 5 AufenthG.

## Avoid the mistakes that can delay your application

### Enrollment can stall without M10

DAK Student and Care Student support electronic M10 notification for eligible university enrollment flows.

### Under 30 or over 30?

DAK Student fits many students up to age 29; Care Student can fit private student coverage up to age 39.

### Private or statutory confusion

Choosing the wrong route can create extra steps. Check statutory, private and exemption rules before applying.

### Language school is different

Care College is better for language school, Studienkolleg, DSH and educational stays — not M10 university enrollment.

## What missing the age-30 switch actually costs

## One wrong insurance choice can cost you money, time and your application deadline

A medical incident can become expensive fast — but the wrong certificate can also delay your visa, enrollment, residence permit or work start.

🏥

€500–€1,500

Emergency doctor visit

One urgent doctor or emergency-room visit can already create a painful bill — before tests, medication or follow-up treatment are added.

🏨

€2,000–€10,000+

Hospital treatment

If observation, surgery, overnight stay or specialist treatment is needed, costs can quickly move from hundreds to thousands of euros.

🎓

1 missed M10

Enrollment can get stuck

For university enrollment, the wrong insurance route can delay the electronic M10 notification to your university.

- Wrong or incomplete proof can delay your visa, enrollment or authority process.
- Cheap home-country policies may miss the exact coverage, dates or repatriation wording required.
- The cheapest policy can become expensive if it is the wrong proof for your situation.

Before you apply, check: coverage amount, validity dates, destination area and repatriation cover.

## 30th birthday on the calendar — switch 4–6 weeks before to avoid the rate jump

## Why act before university enrollment

University enrollment can depend on the right insurance route. Waiting too long can delay M10 notification or create extra steps.

🎓

M10 timing matters

DAK Student and Care Student can support M10 university enrollment flows where applicable.

📄

Wrong route creates delays

Language school, Studienkolleg and DSH usually need Care College, not the university M10 route.

## Frequently Asked Questions

When does the German student tariff end at age 30?

The GKV student tariff (DAK-Studenten, ~€135.52/month) legally ends at age 30 or after the 14th academic semester under § 5 (1) 9 SGB V — whichever comes first. From that point the recognised follow-on is Care Student at €101.54/month.

What replaces the student tariff after 30 in Germany?

The GKV-equivalent Care Student at €101.54/month (CCS €35 + PVN €58.04 + Pflege €8.50, SB €300/year) is the standard recognised follow-on. It is accepted by universities via the M10 electronic notification, just like the DAK student tariff.

Is voluntary GKV cheaper than Care Student for students over 30?

Voluntary GKV for students over 30 costs approximately €210–240/month (min. Rarely. contribution rules apply). Care Student is fixed at €101.54/month — typically the cheaper and simpler option for international students beyond the age or semester limit.

Can I stay on DAK-Studenten past the 14th semester in Germany?

No — the 14-semester cap under § 5 (1) 9 SGB V is strict. DAK issues an end-date and reports the change via the M10 protocol. You need to switch — typically to Care Student (€101.54/month) — from the effective date to avoid a coverage gap.

Does the Ausländerbehörde accept Care Student for a student residence permit in Germany?

Care Student is GKV-equivalent under § 8 SGB V, sends the M10 electronic notification to the university and is regularly accepted by German immigration offices for the student residence permit under § 16b AufenthG.

What happens to student health insurance at age 30 in Germany?

The subsidized GKV student tariff (~€135.52/month) typically ends at the end of the semester in which you turn 30. After that, you can switch to voluntary GKV (from ~€210/month) or private alternatives like [Care Student (€101.54/month, recognized as GKV-equivalent)](/en/insurance-plans/care-student/overview/). The key is switching before your student tariff expires to avoid coverage gaps.

Can international students over 30 still get health insurance in Germany?

Yes. Options include voluntary GKV membership, [Care Student (€101.54/month)](/en/insurance-plans/care-student/overview/), accepted for enrollment at many universities, or [Care College (from €27.50/month)](/en/insurance-plans/care-college/overview/) for students up to 40. The insurance certificate (Versicherungsnachweis) is sent immediately by email as a PDF.

Is Care Student recognized as equivalent to public health insurance?

Yes. Care Student is officially recognized as GKV-equivalent (gleichwertig) and includes the M10 notification required for university enrollment. It covers outpatient treatment, hospitalization, medical repatriation, and prescription medication — €101.54/month (12–29 J.) or €127.60/month (30–39 J.). → [Check Care Student now](/en/insurance-plans/care-student/overview/)
