The most common reason for a refused residence-permit renewal at the Ausländerbehörde is one or two gap days between the old certificate's end date and the new one's start date. The Fiktionsbescheinigung does NOT extend your insurance — you must keep cover running uninterrupted through the entire wait period.

Three rules every residence-permit renewal applicant in Germany should know about the insurance proof:

1. 1 **Apply 6–8 weeks early:** File the Verlängerungsantrag at the Ausländerbehörde at least 6–8 weeks before the old permit expires — major cities (Berlin, Munich, Hamburg) often run longer waiting times.
2. 2 **Cover must run uninterrupted:** The Fiktionsbescheinigung covers your residence status, not your insurance. Lock the long-stay lane with [Care Expatriate from €58/month (up to 5 years)](/en/insurance-plans/care-expatriate/overview/) — entry-age premium fixed for up to 5 years.
3. 3 **Bridge a short wait or category switch:** [Care Economy from €30 / 30 days (up to 2 years)](/en/insurance-plans/care-economy/overview/) is the day-precise bridge between certificates if the appointment is delayed or you switch from student to employment.

Inside: the one date the Ausländerbehörde always checks first on the certificate — and how a single missing day kills the renewal · why the Fiktionsbescheinigung is NOT a free insurance extension — and what to bridge with · when switching from student to employment turns your private lane into mandatory GKV overnight

## 📌 TL;DR — at a glance

- The residence-permit renewal (Aufenthaltstitel-Verlängerung) at the Ausländerbehörde requires uninterrupted health insurance covering Germany under § 5 AufenthG. The certificate must run from the day the old permit expires to at least the day the new permit is issued — gap days are the most common reason for a refused renewal. Apply for the renewal at least 6–8 weeks before the old permit expires; the Fiktionsbescheinigung (provisional certificate) bridges the wait, but only if your insurance is already in place.
- Two recognised private lanes by stay length: Care Expatriate as the long-stay lane for residence permits beyond 12 months from €58/month at entry age 13–40 and up to €432/month at entry age 61–74 (Premium tier) — up to 5 years per contract, premium fixed at the entry age, recognised under § 5 AufenthG; Care Economy as a short bridge from €30 / 30 days (ages up to 64) and from about €88.50 / 30 days (ages 65 and over) for renewals shorter than 12 months or for the wait period between old and new permit.
- If you are employed in Germany above the JAEG threshold (€77,400/year in 2026), under it, a student under 30, or you take up regular employment during the renewal, the GKV (e.g. DAK-Gesundheit) is the standard route — the Fiktionsbescheinigung is accepted as proof of legal residence by every gesetzliche Krankenkasse. The Ausländerbehörde accepts the standard GKV-Mitgliedsbescheinigung as insurance proof for the new residence title.

Key facts at a glance Reviewed September 2, 2026

- **Residence-permit renewal proof under § 5 AufenthG:** The Ausländerbehörde requires uninterrupted health insurance covering Germany for the entire new permit period. Care Expatriate from €58/month (entry age 13–40) up to €432/month (61–74, Premium) is the recognised long-term lane — up to 5 years per contract, premium fixed at the entry age. (Source: § 5 AufenthG · HanseMerkur Care Expatriate AVB).
- **Fiktionsbescheinigung wait period (§ 81 Abs. 4 AufenthG):** The Fiktionsbescheinigung covers legal residence until the Ausländerbehörde decides — but it does NOT renew or extend an existing insurance contract. Care Economy from €30 / 30 days (ages up to 64) and from about €88.50 / 30 days (ages 65 and over) is the day-precise bridge for the wait period. (Source: § 81 Abs. 4 AufenthG · HanseMerkur Care Economy AVB).
- **Switching to employment during renewal — GKV becomes mandatory:** Taking up regular employment in Germany above the marginal-employment threshold typically triggers GKV-Pflicht on the contract start date. DAK-Gesundheit and other gesetzliche Krankenkassen issue a GKV-Mitgliedsbescheinigung that the Ausländerbehörde accepts as insurance proof for the new residence title. (Source: SGB V · DAK-Gesundheit).

## Residence-permit renewal — the six rules the Ausländerbehörde checks on the insurance proof

**Quick answer:** "What does the Ausländerbehörde want for the residence-permit renewal?" — Six fields are checked: renewal application filed early, certificate runs uninterrupted from old permit end through new permit issuance, scope includes Germany, €0 self-pay on the certificate, EU/EEA-admitted insurer, or a current GKV-Mitgliedsbescheinigung from a German Krankenkasse for employees/students.

- Renewal application filed ≥ 6–8 weeks before the old permit expires
- Insurance certificate runs uninterrupted from old permit end → new permit issuance
- Geographic scope on the certificate must include Germany for the full new permit period
- €0 self-pay shown on the certificate — AVB deductible is accepted, on-certificate excess is not
- Insurer must be EU/EEA-admitted (HanseMerkur Reiseversicherung AG, Hamburg, qualifies for private lanes)
- GKV-Mitgliedsbescheinigung from a German Krankenkasse (e.g. DAK-Gesundheit) is the standard proof for employees and students under 30

Lane 3 / 3

### Lane 3 — Employees & students under 30: GKV (DAK-Gesundheit)

If you are employed in Germany under the JAEG threshold (€77,400/year in 2026) or a student under 30, the gesetzliche Krankenversicherung (e.g. DAK-Gesundheit) is the standard route. The Krankenkasse issues a GKV-Mitgliedsbescheinigung accepted by every Ausländerbehörde as insurance proof for the new residence title. No private certificate needed.

## Avoid the mistakes that can delay your application

### Schengen proof missing?

For short Schengen stays, choose insurance that meets the €30,000 minimum-coverage requirement.

### Short stay or longer stay?

Care Visa Protect fits many 1–92 day Schengen visits; Care Economy may fit longer or more flexible stays.

### Wrong insurance can cost time

Before your embassy appointment, check that the proof matches your visa type, dates and destination.

### Multiple entries planned?

If you travel more than once, check the multiple-entry option and the annual day limit before applying.

## What happens if there is a gap day — renewal refused, Fiktionsbescheinigung void, deportation risk

## One wrong insurance choice can cost you money, time and your application deadline

A medical incident can become expensive fast — but the wrong certificate can also delay your visa, enrollment, residence permit or work start.

🏥

€500–€1,500

Emergency doctor visit

One urgent doctor or emergency-room visit can already create a painful bill — before tests, medication or follow-up treatment are added.

🏨

€2,000–€10,000+

Hospital treatment

If observation, surgery, overnight stay or specialist treatment is needed, costs can quickly move from hundreds to thousands of euros.

🇪🇺

€30,000 minimum

Schengen proof must be clear

Your certificate should clearly show the required coverage amount, Schengen validity, travel dates and repatriation benefits.

- Wrong or incomplete proof can delay your visa, enrollment or authority process.
- Cheap home-country policies may miss the exact coverage, dates or repatriation wording required.
- The cheapest policy can become expensive if it is the wrong proof for your situation.

Before you apply, check: coverage amount, validity dates, destination area and repatriation cover.

## Old permit expires soon? Issue the renewal-ready certificate today — start date is your old permit's last day +1

## Why act before the embassy appointment

Schengen visa insurance is not just a formality. Your proof should clearly show the required coverage, dates, validity area and repatriation benefits.

📅

Appointments can be limited

If the proof is missing or unsuitable, preparing corrected documents can cost valuable time.

## FAQ — Residence-permit renewal, Fiktionsbescheinigung and which lane fits your case

## Frequently Asked Questions

What insurance proof does the Ausländerbehörde require at renewal in Germany?

A current certificate covering the new permit period under § 5 AufenthG — no gap days. Care Expatriate (from €58/month, up to 60 months) or GKV (DAK-Gesundheit) are the recognised long-lanes; Care Economy (from €30 / 30 days) works as a short bridge.

Can I renew my residence permit if my insurance expired last week?

Care Economy (from €30 / 30 days) can be back-issued at most 30 days retroactively; longer gaps typically trigger a § 5 AufenthG refusal. Only if you provide a new certificate covering both the expired days and the new permit period.

Is Care Visa Protect accepted for the residence permit renewal in Germany?

No — Care Visa Protect is a Schengen travel lane (≤ 92 days). For the Aufenthaltstitel renewal, switch to Care Expatriate (from €58/month) or GKV before the Ausländerbehörde appointment.

How long must the insurance be valid for a 2-year residence permit renewal?

At least the full 2-year permit period, matching § 5 AufenthG. Care Expatriate (from €58/month, up to 60 months) is renewable in-country; GKV (DAK-Gesundheit) runs unlimited once membership is active.

What if my employer changes during the residence permit extension in Germany?

GKV membership follows the employee, not the employer — no gap under § 175 SGB V. Bring the new employment contract plus the current GKV Mitgliedsbescheinigung to the Ausländerbehörde.
