[Care 01 Saisonarbeiter from €0.39/day (up to 91 days) ](/en/insurance-plans/care01-saisonarbeiter/overview/)

2. [Foreign Employees in Germany](/en/health-insurance-foreign-employees-germany/)

# Health Insurance for Seasonal Workers in Germany — Care 01 from €0.39/Day (Employer Group Policy)

Sources: § 8 Abs. 1 Nr. 2 SGB IV (kurzfristige Beschäftigung — max 70 days / 3 months) · § 5 SGB V (GKV mandate exceptions) · § 28a SGB IV (employer registration) · Care 01 Saisonarbeiter AVB · HanseMerkur Versicherungsgruppe Hamburg · Care Concept AG

**Foreign seasonal workers (Saisonarbeiter) in Germany on a "kurzfristige Beschäftigung" contract — capped at 70 working days or 3 months per calendar year under § 8 Abs. 1 Nr. 2 SGB IV — are sozialversicherungsfrei and not subject to the German statutory insurance mandate.** This applies to harvest helpers (asparagus, strawberries, wine, hops), hospitality temps, ski-resort workers, vineyard crews and agricultural day labourers. The employer is still required to provide acute medical cover for the worker — the recognised standard is the Care 01 Saisonarbeiter group policy.

The standard solution is [Care 01 Saisonarbeiter from €0.39 per worker per day](/en/insurance-plans/care01-saisonarbeiter/overview/) (volume-tiered: €0.48/day under 2,500 days/year, €0.42 from 2,500 days, €0.39 from 5,000 days). Optional accident and liability add-on (€0.03–€0.05/day) is recommended for agricultural and manual work. Ages 13–70; cover from 1 to 91 days per worker per calendar year.

Below: why the 70-day rule means Saisonarbeiter are not in GKV, the four mistakes that void cover during the harvest season, the full Care 01 volume-tier price table, the bridge via Care Economy if a contract extends beyond the 3-month limit, and the clean handover to DAK GKV when a worker converts to a regular German employment contract.

## 📌 TL;DR — at a glance

- Seasonal workers (Saisonarbeiter) in Germany are covered by Care 01 from €0.39/day.
- 1–91 days per calendar year, ages 13–70 — employer registers via Meldetool.
- Optional accident + liability cover for agricultural and harvest work.

Key facts at a glance Reviewed September 9, 2026

- **Care 01 — small employer (<2,500 worker-days/yr):** €0.48 per worker per day. Optional accident + liability add-on €0.05/day. Minimum premium €5 per worker; ages 13–70. (Source: Care 01 Saisonarbeiter AVB · HanseMerkur Versicherungsgruppe Hamburg).
- **Care 01 — mid-volume employer (2,500–4,999 days/yr):** €0.42 per worker per day. Optional accident + liability add-on €0.03/day. Employer registers each worker via the Care Concept Meldetool. (Source: Care 01 Saisonarbeiter AVB · § 28a SGB IV (employer notification)).
- **Care 01 — large employer (≥5,000 days/yr) \[Bestseller\]:** €0.39 per worker per day. Optional accident + liability add-on €0.03/day. Standard for large agricultural cooperatives, vineyards and hop farms. (Source: Care 01 Saisonarbeiter AVB · HanseMerkur Versicherungsgruppe Hamburg).
- **Why Saisonarbeiter are not GKV-mandatory:** § 8 Abs. 1 Nr. 2 SGB IV defines kurzfristige Beschäftigung as ≤70 working days or ≤3 months per calendar year. These workers are sozialversicherungsfrei — no GKV, no Pflegeversicherung, no Rentenversicherung contributions. (Source: § 8 Abs. 1 Nr. 2 SGB IV · § 5 SGB V).

## Four mistakes that void seasonal-worker cover during harvest

**Quick answer:** "Why was my seasonal worker uninsured at the hospital?" — most farms and hospitality employers stumble on one of four points: forgot to register the worker in the Care Concept Meldetool before day 1, exceeded the 70-day / 3-month kurzfristige-Beschäftigung limit (worker becomes sozialversicherungspflichtig and Care 01 cover ends), skipped the optional accident + liability add-on for manual work, or relied on the worker's home-country EHIC card (which only covers tourist-style emergencies, not work-related care). Care 01 plus the add-on removes all four by default.

## Avoid the mistakes that can delay your application

### Employer needs proof

DAK-Gesundheit can provide membership confirmation for a social-security-covered job in Germany.

### Contribution split matters

In statutory employee coverage, the employer generally pays half of the health insurance contribution.

### Family coverage has conditions

Spouse and children may be covered under statutory family insurance only if the requirements are met.

### Health card comes later

Membership confirmation comes first; the health insurance card follows after membership setup.

## What happens if a seasonal worker has no valid cover

## One wrong insurance choice can cost you money, time and your application deadline

A medical incident can become expensive fast — but the wrong certificate can also delay your visa, enrollment, residence permit or work start.

🏥

€500–€1,500

Emergency doctor visit

One urgent doctor or emergency-room visit can already create a painful bill — before tests, medication or follow-up treatment are added.

🏨

€2,000–€10,000+

Hospital treatment

If observation, surgery, overnight stay or specialist treatment is needed, costs can quickly move from hundreds to thousands of euros.

🌾

91 days max

Wrong worker dates create gaps

Seasonal-worker coverage depends on correct employer registration, worker details and insured work dates.

- Wrong or incomplete proof can delay your visa, enrollment or authority process.
- Cheap home-country policies may miss the exact coverage, dates or repatriation wording required.
- The cheapest policy can become expensive if it is the wrong proof for your situation.

Before you apply, check: coverage amount, validity dates, destination area and repatriation cover.

## Frequently asked questions about seasonal-worker health insurance in Germany

## Frequently Asked Questions

Who is a "Saisonarbeiter" under German law?

A worker employed for max. 70 working days or 3 months per calendar year in seasonal sectors (agriculture, hospitality, tourism). Care 01 is the standard insurance for this group.

Who pays for Care 01?

Usually the employer enrols the worker via the Meldetool and pays the premium (€0.39–€0.48 / day, volume-dependent, min. €5).

Does Care 01 cover work accidents?

From €0.39/day for seasonal workers under § 8 SGB IV. The basic tariff covers acute illness only. The optional accident & liability add-on is recommended for agriculture and seasonal manual work.

What is the minimum premium for Care 01 seasonal insurance?

€5 minimum per worker per assignment, regardless of duration. Daily rate €0.39–€0.48 depending on employer volume — a 14-day harvest contract costs €5.46–€6.72 per worker; a full 91-day season costs €35.49–€43.68.

Is Care 01 accepted for a seasonal work visa to Germany?

Yes — Care 01 is a recognised private Incoming policy accepted by German embassies for the seasonal work visa (§ 15a BeschV) and by the Ausländerbehörde for the residence permit. Employer registers the worker through the Meldetool before entry, PDF confirmation issued within minutes.

What insurance do seasonal workers need in Germany?

Seasonal workers in Germany (Saisonarbeiter) need health insurance even if the employment is exempt from social security contributions. [Care 01 Saisonarbeiter starts at €0.39/day](/en/insurance-plans/care01-saisonarbeiter/overview/) and provides medical coverage for stays up to 91 days. The employer registers workers through an online tool and receives an instant insurance certificate.

How much does health insurance for harvest workers in Germany cost?

Care 01 Saisonarbeiter costs from €0.39/day (volume-dependent, minimum €5 insurance premium). For a 90-day season, total costs for full insurance coverage are approximately €35–43. Optional accident and liability insurance is available from €0.05/day extra.

Is the employer responsible for insuring seasonal agricultural workers in Germany?

Yes. Even for short-term employment exempt from social security (Kurzzeitbeschäftigung), the employer must ensure health insurance is in place as a legal insurance requirement. Care 01 allows group registration via an online tool — quick, compliant, with instant proof of insurance.
