# Health Insurance for Family Reunification and Parent Reunification in Germany

Sources: §§ 27–36 AufenthG (Familiennachzug) · § 5 AufenthG · EU Regulation 810/2009 Art. 15 · German Federal Foreign Office · BAMF · HanseMerkur AVB · Care Concept AG

**Bringing a spouse, child or elderly parent to Germany under family reunification (Familiennachzug, §§ 27–36 AufenthG) requires recognised health insurance from day one of the visa application.** The German consulate checks the same EU rule applied to every Schengen application — at least €30,000 medical cover plus medically necessary repatriation — and the Ausländerbehörde then re-checks it at the residence-permit stage under § 5 AufenthG. Without proof, the reunification visa is refused or the family permit is delayed by weeks.

For the visa application and the first months in Germany, [Care Economy from €30 / 30 days](/en/insurance-plans/care-economy/overview/) (up to age 64) is the standard recognised short-term tariff. Once the residence permit is issued and the family stays longer than two years, [Care Expatriate from €58/month](/en/insurance-plans/care-expatriate/overview/) (ages 0–74, up to 5 years) is the standard long-term Incoming tariff — including for parents aged 60+ where age 41–60 starts from €68/month and age 61–74 from €246/month.

Below: the two-stage cover plan (visa stage → post-arrival long-term), exact age-bracket prices for elderly parents, the four mistakes families make at the embassy, and how to obtain the certificate online in under 10 minutes.

## 📌 TL;DR — at a glance

- Family reunion (Familiennachzug) and parent reunion to Germany typically requires Care Economy.
- Older parents (aged 61–74) often switch to Care Expatriate after arrival for long-term cover up to 5 years.
- Both tariffs are typically accepted by the Ausländerbehörde under § 5 AufenthG and the German embassy abroad.

Key facts at a glance Reviewed September 7, 2026

- **Visa stage (spouse / child / parent):** Care Economy from €30 / 30 days for ages up to 64, scaling with age — meets the €30,000 EU minimum and the German consulate's repatriation requirement. (Source: EU Regulation 810/2009 Art. 15(1)).
- **Post-arrival long-term (residence permit > 2 years):** Care Expatriate from €58/month (ages 13–40). Parents aged 41–60 from €68/month, parents aged 61–74 from €246/month — accepted by the Ausländerbehörde under § 5 AufenthG. (Source: TARIF\_META & age-bracket registry (HanseMerkur)).
- **Age-cap & medical exam:** Care Expatriate covers ages 0–74 with no medical examination required at booking. Pre-existing conditions and pregnancy are excluded by the insurer's terms. (Source: HanseMerkur AVB / Care Concept AG).
- **Switching from visa-stage to long-term:** Families typically switch from Care Economy to Care Expatriate when the residence permit is issued. The PDF certificate is reissued instantly so the Ausländerbehörde can re-stamp the permit without delay. (Source: § 5 AufenthG (sufficient subsistence)).

## Four reasons family reunification applications get refused on the insurance point

**Quick answer:** "We submitted insurance — why was the family visa refused?" — most refusals on the insurance point fall into four buckets: cover below €30,000, missing repatriation clause, dates not covering the full requested period, or a Schengen-only tariff for a national D-visa stay. Care Economy and Care Expatriate remove all four by default.

## Avoid the mistakes that can delay your application

### Schengen proof missing?

For short Schengen stays, choose insurance that meets the €30,000 minimum-coverage requirement.

### Short stay or longer stay?

Care Visa Protect fits many 1–92 day Schengen visits; Care Economy may fit longer or more flexible stays.

### Wrong insurance can cost time

Before your embassy appointment, check that the proof matches your visa type, dates and destination.

### Multiple entries planned?

If you travel more than once, check the multiple-entry option and the annual day limit before applying.

## One wrong insurance choice can cost you money, time and your application deadline

A medical incident can become expensive fast — but the wrong certificate can also delay your visa, enrollment, residence permit or work start.

Schengen proof must be clear

Your certificate should clearly show the required coverage amount, Schengen validity, travel dates and repatriation benefits.

- Wrong or incomplete proof can delay your visa, enrollment or authority process.
- Cheap home-country policies may miss the exact coverage, dates or repatriation wording required.
- The cheapest policy can become expensive if it is the wrong proof for your situation.

Before you apply, check: coverage amount, validity dates, destination area and repatriation cover.

## Frequently asked questions about family-reunification health insurance

## Frequently Asked Questions

Which insurance is accepted for parent family-reunification visas (§ 36 AufenthG)?

Care Economy or Care Expatriate — both cover ages up to 74. Care Economy runs from €88.50 / 30 days for ages 65–74; Care Expatriate is €58–€432/month with a €150 deductible. Foreigners' offices accept both under § 36 AufenthG once residence permit is granted. See /en/insurance-plans/care-expatriate/overview/.

Do reunited parents need to switch to statutory GKV after arriving?

No — parents on § 36 AufenthG residence permits stay on private incoming insurance (Care Expatriate or Care Economy) because GKV membership is not automatic. Care Expatriate covers pre-existing chronic conditions after a 3-month qualifying period; details on /en/insurance-plans/care-expatriate/overview/.

Which insurance is required for a family-reunion visa to Germany?

Care Economy from €30/30 days for the visa application, then Care Expatriate from €58/month for long-term cover after arrival — both accepted under § 36 AufenthG. Compare on /en/insurance-plans/care-expatriate/overview/.

Are elderly parents accepted by the insurer?

Yes — Care Economy and Care Expatriate both cover ages 0–74 without medical examination, provided no pre-existing conditions are present at booking. Premium for ages 61–74 runs €125–€432/month depending on tier. See /en/insurance-plans/care-expatriate/overview/.

How long does the Ausländerbehörde require insurance for?

The immigration office accepts proof for the full residence-permit duration (typically 12 months under § 36 AufenthG). Both Care Economy (up to 24 months) and Care Expatriate (up to 60 months) issue PDF certificates upfront — /en/insurance-plans/care-expatriate/overview/.

What insurance do parents need for family reunion in Germany?

Parents joining their children in Germany (Elternnachzug/family reunification) typically need health insurance recognized by the Ausländerbehörde (immigration office). Options include incoming insurance for the transition period (from €30/30 days) or long-term private insurance like Care Expatriate (from €58/month, up to 5 years). The insurance certificate is required for the visa application. → [Compare Care Economy from €30/30 days](/en/insurance-plans/care-economy/overview/).

Do I need separate health insurance for each family member in Germany?

Yes. German immigration authorities (Ausländerbehörde) require a separate insurance certificate for each person applying for a residence permit — including spouse and children. In the public system (GKV), dependents may qualify for free family insurance (Familienversicherung). In private insurance, each person needs their own insurance policy with adequate medical coverage.
