Retirees Check: Authority/Embassy — Which Proofs Are Commonly Required in Germany?

For a Schengen visit (up to 90 days), Care Economy (€50–125/30 days by age) meets the requirements. For long-term retirement stays or family reunification, Care Expatriate covers ages up to 74 (from €68/month for ages 41–60, from €246/month for ages 61–74) — accepted by German embassies.

Care Economy and Care Expatriate do not require a medical examination but typically exclude treatment for pre-existing conditions and any acute treatment planned before departure. New conditions arising during the stay are covered within the policy terms.

Standard checklist under § 36 AufenthG (family reunion) or § 7 AufenthG (retirement stay): passport, biometric photo, health-insurance certificate (Care Expatriate PDF), pension proof (min. ~€1,120/month per Bundesagentur für Arbeit reference rate 2026), accommodation and clean criminal record.

The immigration office verifies: (1) valid Care Expatriate policy covering the full permit duration, (2) sufficient income (pension ≥ subsistence level, currently ~€563/month plus rent under SGB XII), (3) health screening if from a TB high-incidence country per § 5 AufenthG.
