    Frequently asked questions

Which health insurance do I need as an international student in Germany?

Students under 30 typically enrol in statutory GKV such as DAK-Gesundheit. Students over 30, PhD candidates or those exempt from GKV use Care Student (€101.54/month, recognised as GKV-equivalent via the M10 form). For language courses beforehand, Care College starts at €27.50/month.

What happens if I'm over 30 and can't get the student GKV rate?

You use Care Student (€101.54/month) — a private tariff explicitly recognised as GKV-equivalent for university enrolment. The insurer issues the M10 notification directly to the university.

Do I need a blocked account (Sperrkonto) in addition to health insurance for my student visa?

Yes — the blocked account (currently €11,904 for 12 months) is required for the student visa alongside health insurance. Our BASTI blocked-account bundles include the account plus Care Visa Protect and DAK-Gesundheit options.

Which proof do I need before enrolment at a German university?

€ 0 for the M10 electronic confirmation: statutory GKV members receive it from DAK-Gesundheit; private/exempt students get it from Care Student. § 199a SGB V requires the university to receive M10 electronically before matriculation — no paper certificates accepted since 01/2022.

What proof does a preparatory college (Studienkolleg) accept in Germany?

Studienkolleg is a language/prep course, not yet a full degree — so students use Care College (from €27.50/month, ages up to 29; from €33.50/month, 30+) with immediate PDF certificate. Once you matriculate for the actual degree, you switch to DAK-Gesundheit (under 30) or Care Student (30+).
