Quick answer: Care Austria Education from €51/month (ages 12–35, 364-day variant) issues a DE/EN Versicherungsbestätigung by email in minutes that is, in most cases, accepted for inscription at Austrian universities and at MA 35 / Bezirkshauptmannschaft for the § 64 NAG student permit — individual caseworker practice may vary, not legal advice.
Editorial note: figures and acceptance rules reflect typical practice for international students in 2025–26. Final eligibility (ÖGK self-insurance, § 64 NAG, Erasmus EHIC) depends on your individual case and the decision of the competent Austrian authority.
Indicative: around €800 in lost gross weekly wages at the Austrian median per week of residence-permit delay (source: indicative AT median earnings 2024/25) — Care Austria premium for the same week: about €12.

No insurance proof — no inscription, no § 64 NAG permit. That is the practical rule at MA 35 Wien and Bezirkshauptmannschaften across Austria — Uni Wien, TU Wien, WU Wien, BOKU, MedUni Wien, Uni Graz, TU Graz, JKU Linz, Uni Salzburg, Uni Innsbruck and Uni Klagenfurt typically require a comprehensive Austrian Versicherungsnachweis at matriculation. Care Austria Education from €51/month (ages 12–35, 364-day variant) issues a German/English PDF certificate by email within minutes — no medical questionnaire, monthly cancellation, switchable to ÖGK student self-insurance once eligible.
Trusted by international students from Pakistan (Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore), India (Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai), Bangladesh, the Philippines, Nigeria, Türkiye, Indonesia, Vietnam and Brazil — preparing the Austrian student visa, OeAD scholarship file or § 64 NAG application for Vienna, Graz, Linz, Salzburg, Innsbruck or Klagenfurt.
From €51/month
Ages 12–35 · 364-day variant · adult brackets to 74. ÖGK student self-insurance ≈ 67,10 €/month and requires Studienerfolg.

Worries every international student in Austria has
Quick answer: Four worries come up with almost every international student: inscription refused without a valid Versicherungsnachweis, MA 35 appointment slipping before semester start, uncertainty whether ÖGK self-insurance is even open to non-EU students, and unclear Wahlarzt reimbursement. Care Austria Education from €51/month with an instant PDF certificate solves all four in one step.
Avoid the mistakes that can delay your application
Enrollment can stall without M10
DAK Student and Care Student support electronic M10 notification for eligible university enrollment flows.
Under 30 or over 30?
DAK Student fits many students up to age 29; Care Student can fit private student coverage up to age 39.
Private or statutory confusion
Choosing the wrong route can create extra steps. Check statutory, private and exemption rules before applying.
Language school is different
Care College is better for language school, Studienkolleg, DSH and educational stays — not M10 university enrollment.
What happens without recognised insurance proof in Austria?
One wrong insurance choice can cost you money, time and your application deadline
A medical incident can become expensive fast — but the wrong certificate can also delay your visa, enrollment, residence permit or work start.
🏥
€500–€1,500
Emergency doctor visit
One urgent doctor or emergency-room visit can already create a painful bill — before tests, medication or follow-up treatment are added.
🏨
€2,000–€10,000+
Hospital treatment
If observation, surgery, overnight stay or specialist treatment is needed, costs can quickly move from hundreds to thousands of euros.

Austria is different
German proof may not fit MA35
For Austrian residence documents, choose an Austria-specific option instead of assuming German-focused insurance will fit.
- Wrong or incomplete proof can delay your visa, enrollment or authority process.
- Cheap home-country policies may miss the exact coverage, dates or repatriation wording required.
- The cheapest policy can become expensive if it is the wrong proof for your situation.
Before you apply, check: coverage amount, validity dates, destination area and repatriation cover.

Why act before Austrian residence paperwork

How Wahlarzt reimbursement works in Austria (Vienna example)
A Wahlarzt is a doctor without an ÖGK contract — common among Vienna specialists (internists, dermatologists, gynaecologists, psychotherapists). You pay the invoice first and submit it for reimbursement. With ÖGK you typically receive around 80% of the very low contract tariff — for a €200 first-visit invoice that means €38–55 back. With Care Austria the Wahlarzt fee is reimbursed within the policy terms without Selbstbehalt, which usually gives a higher net refund. Submit invoices through the Care Concept customer portal; ÖGK members use meine ÖGK / meinesv.at.
EHIC for EU/EEA students in Austria — what it covers
The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) — printed on the back of your home country's insurance card (AOK, TK, Barmer in Germany; ZUS in Poland; INPS in Italy; CPAM in France) — covers medically necessary treatment during short stays in Austria. For an Erasmus semester this is often enough together with a short top-up. For a full degree most Austrian universities still expect a comprehensive Austrian Versicherungsnachweis, and the Anmeldebescheinigung under § 51 NAG normally lists insurance proof as a required document. Care Austria closes the gap from €51/month.
Insurance by student profile — Austria
PhD and doctoral candidates in Austria
PhD candidates over 30 typically lose ÖGK student self-insurance eligibility once Studienerfolg or income limits are exceeded. The standard route is Care Austria (open-ended variant) or voluntary ÖGK via the institution if employed as a research assistant.
Erasmus and exchange students in Vienna, Graz or Salzburg
EHIC plus a short-stay top-up usually covers an Erasmus semester. If the host university requires an Austrian certificate, Care Economy from €30 per 30 days or Care Austria are the typical solutions. Verify with the international office before inscription.
Language-course students and Vorstudienlehrgang attendees
The Vorstudienlehrgang der Wiener Universitäten (VWU) and language schools are not part of ÖGK student self-insurance. Care Austria Education is the standard route while you are preparing for full inscription.
Over-30 / GKV-style exempt students
Once Studienerfolg no longer covers 16 ECTS per semester, or the income limit is exceeded, ÖGK student self-insurance ends. Care Austria (open-ended variant) is the typical follow-on cover — premium scales by age.
Rot-Weiß-Rot-Karte plus for graduates
After graduation many international students transition to the Rot-Weiß-Rot-Karte plus (RWR-Karte plus) or a regular work residence permit. Care Austria can continue until you start a regular employment that puts you into ÖGK or BVAEB automatically.
Working alongside your studies — insurance impact
Non-EU students on the Aufenthaltsbewilligung Studierende (§ 64 NAG) may work up to 20 hours per week during the semester (Bachelor/Master); PhD candidates have no statutory cap. Once you cross the Geringfügigkeitsgrenze (€551.10/month, Stand 2025) the employer enrols you in ÖGK Pflichtversicherung automatically. Until that confirmation arrives, keep Care Austria active — it is monthly cancellable so the switch costs nothing extra. EU/EEA students with the Anmeldebescheinigung (§ 51 NAG) have no hour limit. Sources: oesterreich.gv.at, AMS, ÖGK 2025.
Family co-insurance (Mitversicherung) with parents in ÖGK
Free family co-insurance (beitragsfreie Mitversicherung) in ÖGK ends at age 18 by default and can be extended to a maximum of 27 if you provide a Studienbestätigung (Inskriptionsbestätigung) from an Austrian university. It is only available to children of Austrian ÖGK members — third- country nationals whose parents are insured abroad cannot use it. For everyone outside that narrow window the standard routes are Care Austria Education from €51/month or ÖGK student self-insurance at €67.10/month. Source: gesundheitskasse.at, keyword "Mitversicherung Kind über 18".
Tuition fees Austria — Studienbeitrag and ÖH Beitrag (context)
Beyond insurance, international students plan for two Austrian study fees: Studienbeitrag (tuition) of €726.72 per semester for non-EU students and €0–€363.36 for EU/EEA students depending on Toleranzsemester, and the ÖH Beitrag (student-union contribution) of about €22 per semester. Both are paid via the student portal (KUSSS at JKU, u:space at Uni Wien, TISS at TU Wien, MyTUG at TU Graz) alongside inscription — independent of your insurance choice.

Frequently Asked Questions
What health insurance do international students need in Austria?
International students enrolling at Universität Wien, TU Wien, WU Wien, BOKU, MedUni Wien, Uni Graz, JKU Linz, Uni Salzburg or Uni Innsbruck need proof of health insurance both for inscription and for the student residence permit at MA 35 (Vienna) or the responsible Bezirkshauptmannschaft. Care Austria Education from €51/month (ages 12–35) is accepted by universities and immigration authorities. It includes free choice of doctor (Wahlarzt) within the policy terms, without Selbstbehalt.
How much does student health insurance cost in Austria in 2026?
Three typical options: Care Austria Education from €51/month (12–35, 364-day variant); the open-ended Care Austria variant runs higher and scales by age. ÖGK student self-insurance is €67.10/month (Stand 2025, gesundheitskasse.at) — requires Austrian residence, Studienerfolg of 16 ECTS/semester and an income limit. EHIC is free for EU/EEA students via their home insurer but covers only emergencies.
Is Care Austria valid for the Austrian student residence permit (§ 64 NAG)?
Yes. Care Austria is recognised as Krankenversicherungsnachweis by MA 35 Vienna and by every Bezirkshauptmannschaft for the residence permit under § 64 NAG. The PDF certificate is emailed immediately after the online application — ready for the residence-permit appointment and the Anmeldebescheinigung if you are an EU citizen.
Can I switch from Care Austria to ÖGK student self-insurance later?
Yes — Care Austria can be cancelled monthly. Once you meet the ÖGK self-insurance criteria (Studienerfolg 16 ECTS/semester, Austrian residence, income limit), you can switch to the €67.10/month rate. Many international students start with Care Austria for the first 1–2 semesters (no waiting period) and switch to ÖGK when they qualify.
Do EU students need health insurance in Austria?
Yes — every student needs valid cover. EU/EEA students can use the EHIC card for emergencies, but for full inscription Austrian universities normally expect a comprehensive Versicherungsnachweis covering the whole study period. EHIC alone is rarely enough for the Anmeldebescheinigung (§ 51 NAG) or the inscription office. Care Austria closes that gap.
What is Wahlarzt and how does reimbursement work in Austria?
A Wahlarzt is a doctor without an ÖGK contract. With ÖGK you pay first and get back around 80% of the very low contract tariff (often €38–55 of a €200 first-visit invoice). Care Austria reimburses Wahlarzt fees within the policy terms without Selbstbehalt — usually a better outcome for students who use private specialists.
Are PhD candidates and exchange / Erasmus students covered the same way?
Not always. PhD candidates over 30 typically don't qualify for ÖGK student self-insurance and use Care Austria (or voluntary ÖGK if employed by the institution). Erasmus students stay covered via EHIC for short semesters, but the host university may still ask for an Austrian Versicherungsnachweis — Care Austria Education or Care Economy is the usual gap-filler.
Will I get an e-card with Care Austria?
No — the e-card is issued only by ÖGK, BVAEB, SVS or KFA. With Care Austria you present the PDF Versicherungsbestätigung at contract doctors and hospitals; for Wahlarzt visits you pay the invoice and submit it for reimbursement through the Care Concept customer portal.
Can I work in Austria with a student visa?
Yes — non-EU students on the Aufenthaltsbewilligung Studierende (§ 64 NAG) may work up to 20 hours per week during the semester (Bachelor/Master); PhD candidates have no statutory hour cap. The first paid hour normally triggers ÖGK Pflichtversicherung through the employer, which replaces or runs alongside Care Austria. EU/EEA students under the Anmeldebescheinigung (§ 51 NAG) have no hour limit. Keep your insurance proof live until ÖGK officially confirms the new cover, then cancel Care Austria monthly.
How long does MA 35 Wien take to issue the Aufenthaltsbewilligung Studierende?
MA 35 Wien typically processes a first student residence-permit application in 4–8 weeks once your file is complete (Zulassungsbescheid, insurance proof, Unterhaltsmittel, accommodation). Bezirkshauptmannschaften outside Vienna (Graz, Linz, Salzburg, Innsbruck, Klagenfurt) are often a bit faster. Book the appointment via the official portals — wien.gv.at/amtshelfer for MA 35, the BH portal of your federal state otherwise. Care Austria Education from €51/month bridges the wait: the PDF certificate is accepted as Krankenversicherungsnachweis from day one and is monthly cancellable.
